Volunteer Safety Tips
The safety of our volunteers is very important. Most accidents and injuries are 100% preventable. Please review these safety tips before your first volunteer work day.
-
Wear safety glasses and work gloves while working. Both will be provided for you.
-
Be aware of what is going on around you and who is working around you at all times. Cut shrubs sometimes fall in unpredictable ways.
-
If there is a member of the city crew operating a chainsaw, give him wide berth. He will have on hearing protection and may not realized that you are beside or behind him.
-
There are many cut stumps in the areas where we are working and they are not always visible because of leaves and other fallen debris. Watch your footing and be extra cautious when walking through any areas where woody invasive plants have been removed.
-
Be courteous to those working around you, work cooperatively.
-
Drink water or gatorade to stay hydrated, especially in warmer weather.
-
Wear bug repellant in warm weather.
-
Pace yourself and take a break now and then. You are much more likely to make a mistake and get hurt if you are overly fatigued. Breaks for water and rest are encouraged.
-
Follow instructions on safe handling of herbicide.
